African History of Christianity
Christianity has an ancient history in Africa that began with Saint Mark. Born in Cyrene, which is in modern-day Libya, Mark is traditionally honored as the first person to bring the Gospel to the continent. He traveled to Egypt around the year 49 AD and founded the Church in Alexandria, becoming its first bishop.
While most historians believe Mark remained in Egypt, the church he started there became the gateway for the faith to spread south into the Nubian kingdoms. Because of this, Saint Mark is celebrated as the "Apostle of Africa," connecting the early Christian movement directly to the heritage of the Nubian people.

Remember the days of old; consider the generations long past.
Ask your father and he will tell you, your elders, and they will explain to you.”
